Mong For Mang (WIP)
Dream for the Lost

'The creature is made up of people who have lost their memories'

Artboard 1.png

While exploring the abandoned house, the girl encounters a masked creature with human limbs,

It almost looks like there are people trapped inside with no way out.

All this creature has ever known is its insatiable hunger, praying on any unexpecting explorers that might come into its territory

Mong' means 'Dream' and 'Mang' means 'Lost' in Korean. 'Mong for Mang' signifies 'Dream for the Lost,' telling the story of a girl traveling through surreal dream worlds to rescue her sister from a witch.

When I was developing this concept, I was heavily inspired by my relationship with my older sister.

I loved the process of bringing the creature to life, from gathering references to creating the final look!

The type of fur that I had in my mind for this creature was quite unique. After many iterations I decided to stay true to the traditional Korean dance costume. I worked on emulating the look of the twisted thread, which proved to be a challenge, but I'm satisfied with the end result!

The creature's design is inspired by the Korean Tiger costume, made of layered white thread.

The biggest challenge was making the fur appear messy while still maintaining the distinct layers of the threads. Given the limited time and considering this is my first experience of grooming in Houdini, I aimed to optimize the workflow to make the process more efficient.

To create the layered effect, I first made a density mask. This mask allowed me to generate the hair row by row, achieving the desired look.

After generating the hair, I applied a hair simulation to achieve a natural shape, then introduced length variations for added realism.

Instead of creating braids, I opted for a simpler approach.

I used a sweep mesh and extracted the curves from the edges.

Finally, I used those curves as custom clumping guides.
